Pinned posts can't be optimized to be per-stream resulting in pinned posts being pinned on streams where they're just not very relevant. They hurt optimization due to the ordering behavior not being able to take them into account with new timestamp column. They hurt auto updating and timestamp paging due to them being out of the datetime order cycle. Most often a stream will have very few pinned activity resulting in slower queries for little to no gain. For these reasons pinned posts will be removed. If they added in again they will be done so as announcements outside of normal activity, stored in a separate table, and displayed separately at the top of a stream.
