If you protect a Joomla directory (e.g. /images/myfiles) then Joomlas htaccess file blocks directory listing. This implements a parameter to force directory listing with it default enabled (as is expected behavior by the user) to avoid that issue. Optionally can also block directory listing for the protected directory.
